Due to the increasing number of extreme events like storms, infestation with bark beetles and drought, which are causing high amounts of salvage timber, the forest sector needs to adapt strategies and to consider redesigning the roundwood supply chain. This should ensure a quick transport of roundwood to prevent further loss in value. Additionally, wood industry is confronted with decreasing numbers of crane-truck drivers. The redesigned supply chain should help to overcome possible bottlenecks resulting from technical and mandatory restricitions. In this thesis the specific transport concept of multi-echelon unimodal transport was investigated with a discrete event simulation model. Resulting from the experiments, this study shows the best fleet configurations with respect to specific performance indices like cost or transport volume. In addition, the redesigned supply chain has advantages compared to the single-echelon transport, like decreasing driving time and the potential of cutting costs. Furthermore, the multi-echelon unimodal supply chain can be seen as a strategy against the possible lack of crane-truck drivers, due to the fact that less crane-trucks are needed to transport the same amount of roundwood per week. Thus, the quick transport of salvage wood can also be ensured in the future.
