The main objective of this master thesis was the documentation and analysis of the event at the Gastererbach on 31st August 2014. The Gastererbach is a torrent which is located in South Tyrol (Italy). The chronological and territorial reconstruction of the event was the most important part of the work. A cold front coming from the North brought heavy rainfall to the catchment area of the Gastererbach. Due to this rainfall a debris flood occurred. The deposition area was located on the main road “Brennerstaatstraße SS 12” between the villages Blumau and Atzwang. The first documented deposition was located on hm ~0.59 at 18:55 CET. Shortly afterwards a second debris flow deposition occurred (19:30 CET), in which the chief of the fire fighters of Atzwang lost his live. Radar pictures of the catchment area of the Gastererbach demonstrate that the rainfall started at 17:00 CET and ended at 19:00 CET. In these two hours about 50 mm of rain fell in the catchment area of the Gastererbach. Moreover, the estimated volume of solids in the deposition area was approximately 5,000 m³. The calculated peak flow (mixed runoff) of the event was between 55 m³/s and 66 m³/s (hm ~1.16). The hypothesis, that the change in land use at the catchment area of the Gastererbach has an impact on the runoff regime, can neither be approved nor denied. The main risk factor in the catchment area is the constructed undercrossing of the “Brennerstaatsstraße”, where the Gastererbach flows into the river Eisack. The dimension of the undercrossing is too small for torrents in which debris flows can occur. The need for coordination between the various participating offices in the planning process for such a complex project is demonstrated by this example.
