Abstract:
The present work documents the influence of sustainable tourism and regional identity on the attitude to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape Brandenburg. For this purpose, residents of the biosphere reserve were asked with a standardized questionnaire about the topic areas, place attachment and regional identity, affinity for sustainable tourism and acceptance of the biosphere reserve. Based on relevant literature on the subject areas hypotheses were proposed and compared with the results of the survey. The evaluation was carried out by means of statistical tests. Overall, a high acceptance of the biosphere reserve among the population was found. More than 70% of respondents stated that they are in favor of a permanent biosphere reserve. The perception of sustainable tourism is very positive for the population. It turned out that the biosphere reserve with sustainable tourism is certainly considered as a driving force. The results of the empirical study also show that the regional identity or place attachment has an influence on the attitude of the biosphere reserve. On the other hand, sociodemographic characteristics, the affinity to tourism as well as the positive expectations of new residents can be seen as influencing factors. Based on the findings, recommendations are suggested for the additional acceptance of the biosphere reserve and the engagement of the local population.
