Subject of the work presented here is the study of subsurface irrigation opportunities in viticulture. The test site is located in Andau in Burgenland, only a few kilometers away from the Hungarian border. Irrigation in this region is of course nothing new and essential for the qualitative and quantitative securing of yield. The novelty of the irrigation system used in Andau is a soil additive called Betasoil. This soil additive, which together with the subsurface irrigation is incorporated into the soil in a single step, should improve the storage ability and distribution of soil water. Betasoil is supposed to achieve an improvement of conventional subsurface irrigation. Also in a version equipped with a liquid fertilizer should Betasoil offer advantages, because the added nutrients will be kept in the root zone of the crop by limiting deep perculation. To clarify these and other issues, a sampling grid was placed over the examined field. At three different dates, samples were takenina depth of 0.05 to 0.85 m (divided into 0.10 m increments) using a drilling gear. Soil water content (gravimetric) was measured. Using these data, an interpolation process was used. Through the presentation of different profile levels, it is possible to detect trends and abnormalities easily and quickly. With the statistics, a closer look at the quality of the collected data has been taken, to detect any significant inhomogeneities and inhomogeneities in e.g. the mean and variance. Geostatistical methods were used to assess the impact of Betasoil and also the nature of the test field with respect to investigate the soil water content distribution.
