With the aim of improving the mechanical performance of the adhesive 1% cellulose-nano-fibrils were added to the adhesive systems urea-formaldehyde and polyvinylacetate in the adhesive bonding of solid wood. To test the potential of cellulose-nano-fibrills in the bond-line a lap shear test and a double-cantilever test were performed. The objective is, to increase the lap shear strength and the fracture energy at the respective samples through the reinforcement of the glue joint with cellulose. To evaluate this, the results of the cellulose-reinforced samples were compared with those of non-reinforced samples which were prepared in the same manner. Furthermore, the effects of the cellulose fibrils were tested in contrast to the untreated samples under moist, wet and dry climatic conditions. In order to obtain information about the bond -line the thickness and the penetration were analysed. This research was done at different magnifications in the light microscope. Because of the high percentage of wood fracture at the lap shear test it cannot be said that an improvement in the adhesive strength by addition of CNF was found. The fracture energy tests which were also conducted showed no significant differences in bond strength. Microscopical analyses of the cured urea formaldehyde bond line showed that the non-reinforced samples had a thinner bond line compared to the modified ones.
