- Abstract:
- The aim of this study was to quantify the drying performance of energy wood depending on the location, the storage variation and the tree species. Further, a model for the drying should be developed. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted at three sites. At each site two storage variants with five tree species each was set up.
The experiment took place from February 2014 to December 2014. At the beginning and end the dry mass and the moisture content of the material were determined. Each month, the material was weight to determine the monthly changes in weight and thus moisture content.
The average moisture content at the start was 44%. During the first five months of storage, a moisture content reduction to an average of 22% was observed. In the other five months from July to December, a moisture content increase of 1% on average was observed. Rewetting happened on rainy days in late summer and on days with high relative humidity in autumn. Overall, the coniferous species, such as spruce and pine, showed the highest drying efficiency. Contrary, the deciduous species such as beech, oak and hornbeam, showed lower drying efficiency.
On average, no significant differences could be observed in the amount of dry matter between start and end of the experiment. Beech showed the lowest dry matter loss.
The drying model included the variables tree species, storage variate, storage period length and period averages of temperature, relative humidity and the sum of rainfall. Plausible models could be obtained for beech, spruce and hornbeam, while oak and pine models did not perform satisfactorily.
