Abstract:
Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and pyrolysis gain meaning in the contemporary discourse on climate-friendly and sustainable utilization of biomass especially, agrigultural residues and organic wastes. Not only properteries, applications, inherent hazards and legal barriers of produced chars are relevant, but also their economic and procedural feasibility. This master thesis gives a statement on the economic potential of sewage sludge, cattle slurry and biogas digestate as pyroylsis- and HTC-feedstock on the basis of a total cost calculation of selected process plants located in Austria. Consequently, production-relevant expenditures were listed and the influence of partial costs on the total costs was depicted. Additionly, prices for chars were computed according to given amortization periods. The focus of this thesis lies on the techno-economic assessment of two thermochemical conversion processes neglecting legal aspects and barriers of bio- and hydrochar applications. It turned out that HTC and pyrolysis of sewage sludge is economically attractive, in contrast to cattle slurry and biogas digestate as input substrate showing higher total costs. Thus it is doubtable whether expensively produced chars are able to compete with cheaper carbonizates of similar quality.
