Abstract The aim of this research work was to develop a spruce veneer plywood with improved mechanical properties in terms of bending and tensile strength. Spruce veneers were partly delignified using the Organosolv- and an alkaline process followed by the densification. A series of tests served as a tribute in which the spruce veneer was treated with deionized water. The 3-point bending test showed that a 5-layer alkaline treated plywood (155 MPa) has almost twice the bending strength compared to the reference samples (87 MPa). The Organosolv treatment also revealed significantly improved mechanical properties regarding to bending strength and tensile strength. The average density could also be increased to a maximum of 0.9643 g/cm3 by the mentioned pretreatments. On the basis of microscopic pictures, it could be shown that the wood cells did not collapse completely due to delignification and densification and therefore the potential maximum density could not be achieved. Furthermore, it was noticed that the delignification process negatively influenced the swelling behavior of the plywood.
