Abstract:
A view on American city development - Urban sprawl as a negative effect of urban de-velopment and the everyday life of the residents. Based on a case-study of the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, American urban development is discussed and analyzed in a European approach to city development. The paper discusses how current American urban development impacts on everyday life in the community and how to ensure it become a sustainable development for the various user groups. Different housing and living situations in various neighborhoods of Lafayette and West Lafayette are examined and interpreted on the basis of European and American theories of sustainable and livable city development. With the use of these housing examples the writer was able to map a certain area of the cities with its current built environment in order to find neighborhoods which either are good examples of urban development or create more problems for its residents. The city planners of Lafayette and West Lafayette have a difficult time resisting and contain-ing urban sprawl in their cities. Since the introduction of the automobile, city planners all over America have to deal with the problem of urban sprawl as city centers lose their important mixed-use cores because of industry and businesses moving out to the suburbs or along the highways. Strategies are envisaged to arrest this negative development and bring back the residents to the city centers. This is not a problem which can be solved in a short time and that is why city planners need to start taking actions immediately. The cities need to take ac-tions to get the residents to move more by foot or by bicycle instead of taking the car. The cities need to expand their public transportation systems, the sidewalks and the bicycle lane network. Even more importantly the cities need to create an awareness of pedestrians and cyclists.
