AddedValueGreen! – Sustainable Management of urban green infrastructure

Urban green infrastructure as well as approaches to sustainable management and control by (planning) instruments is content of the research project. Vienna has successfully positioned itself in the international competition as a city, combining urban density with high quality of life. Urban green infrastructure will make a decisive contribution. These qualities and the general trend of urbanization lead to a strong population growth in urban centers. Vienna is growing and more and more land in the suburbs is built up and the existing urban development gets established and compacted. Both have negative influence on the quality and usability of urban green infrastructure as a natural resource and for all residents of the city. The high exploitation pressure additionally reinforces these effects. With the project “MehrWertGrün” ("AddedValueGreen!") the basis for decision-making and reasoning principles for the Viennese urban planning and -administration are drawn up to give reasons for the specific benefits and value of urban green infrastructure and its maintenance. Management and intervention options for the Viennese urban planning are identified and a “Grünflächenfaktor” ("green space factor") is developed as a tool for sustainable management of urban green infrastructure. Through an inter- and transdisciplinary approach regulating, socio-cultural and economic effects of urban green infrastructure are analyzed and incorporated.
