Flood documentation Danube May/June 2013
- Wasser - Atmosphäre - Umwelt
Abstract
Heavy rainfall in the end of May to the beginning of June 2013 along the northern edge of the Alps reached their maximum in the night from Saturday, 1st June to Sunday, 2nd June with more than 350 liters per day and square-meter. Subsequently in the middle of the next week, rainfall concentrated in the Danube region in Upper and Lower Austria as well as in Vienna. Due to the long duration of this rainfall, flooding situations emerged which especially affected the large rivers. In some regions, the discharge of 2002 or 2005, respectively, was even exceeded. Thanks to a large number of already realized flood protection measures, the damages in settlement areas were minor compared to 2002. Nevertheless, total damage is estimated to be 2 – 3 billion Euro for total Austria, whereby these figures are still not confirmed. The loss of 5 lives has to be considered as particularly tragic. This project aims in documenting the flooding event of May / June 2013 along the Austrian Danube in Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Vienna regarding meteorology / hydrology, inundated areas, sediment transport and river morphology as well as damages and protection measures.
