Climate Games in the City of Vienna
Abstract
VIENNACLIMATEGAMES aims to get a deeper understanding of what young citizens perceive to be necessary/possible climate action from an individual and city perspective in and for the city of Vienna. A participatory approach is adopted that explicitly recognises the agency of young people in the fight against climate change and as inhabitants of the city of Vienna. It engages with young citizens (age groups 12-14 and 15-18) in Viennese schools in a series of workshops. In VIENNACLIMATEGAMES a card game will also be developed that brings in different actors’ perspectives and thus enables the young citizens to explore the trade-offs involved in climate action. Through observing this game being played in schools, the research team will be able to gain an understanding of what young citizens perceive to be necessary/possible climate action when other actors’ perspectives are in the mix. To accompany this card game, a set of teaching resources will be developed and made available to teachers in the city of Vienna so that this game can continue to be utilised by Viennese schools after the project has ended to provide a frame for participatory climate change education.
