Soil-borne diseases in garlic
Abstract
The project aims to detect the potential harmful organisms on garlic in the field and to assess their impact on Austrian garlic cultivation. Reliable laboratory detection procedures will be developed for the most important garlic pathogens. The development of soil and plant-derived diseases under changing climatic conditions will be analyzed across the entire production chain. Concepts for a reduction of infestation will be developed. Harvesting methods and harvest after-treatment as a possible cause of infection are analyzed. The project has the following objectives: 1) Biological data for the diagnosis and assessment of soil-borne fungi, focusing on Fusarium diseases. These data will provide the baseline or all further surveys, analyzes and recommendations. 2) Knowledge of the primary inoculum source for the further development of new garlic producing strategies: The focus is on two potential sources of inoculum for phytopathogenic fungi, in particular seedlings and soil contamination. 3) Knowledge of the potential sources of infection and contamination as well as disease-promoting operational measures, from cultivation to harvesting and storage. 4) Instructions for minimizing the occurrence of diseases. 5) Dissemination of knowledge 6) High-quality garlic from organic and integrated production for consumers.
