Abstract
Aims of the project „Urban Heat Islands Strategic Plan Vienna“:
• Development of a strategy plan for the City of Vienna for the implementation of measures of urban planning, open space planning and urban ecology in order to reduce effects of urban heat islands (UHI).
• Identification of possible courses of action for the City of Vienna based on the tools of the control levels of urban planning and urban development.
• Identification of options to raise awareness and acceptance of measures to reduce UHI effects.
Main content-related tasks of the project „UHI-STRAT Vienna“:
• Identification and evaluation of measures to effectively reduce UHI effects (e.g. improvement of urban spaces in terms of heat stress, especially under consideration of micro-/mesoclimatic conditions in urban and open space planning; adaption in the design of public and private open spaces such as streets, squares or parks in the area of settlement with a view to reducing UHI effects; development of information and early warning systems; public relations).
• Assessment of the measures and implementation strategies in terms of economic benefit, resources required, acceptance by politics and population as well as feasibility.
• Verification of the possibilities of implementation of the measures within the control levels and tools of urban planning and urban development of the City of Vienna.
• Development of a strategy plan after identifying the relevant control levels and considering potentially necessary supplementations or changes of the urban planning tools for the implementation of the measures.
• Development of a hands-on guide with an interactive tool for awareness raising and decision making as evidence-based decision support for a sustainable implementation of the measures.
• Analysis of feasibility: Identification of possibilities of implementing the measures on the basis of two characteristic urban structures in Vienna chosen as pilot actions.
