Abstract
Climate scenarios as well as agricultural studies point at drought problems for the cultivation of arable land in eastern parts of Austria. In the coming years this trend might be strengthened and especially for organic farming larger harvesting failures can be expected.
Eastern Austria is dominated by large-scale fields and a lack of landscape structures. The present research project is investigating positive effects of these structures to enhance the micro climate on fields. Therefore natural landscape structures should be developed, which fulfil economic, climatic and ecological requirements. Appropriate plants will be cultivated on the fields - similar to agroforestry systems - to advance efficiency in terms of resource use (biomass, biogas, renewable raw materials) and (water) resource protection of the soil. Different adapted variants of landscape structures will be valuated by their costs and economical benefits.
This project will provide a scientific background for assessing the profitability of landscape structures in fields in Eastern Austrian regions. With these results an adaptation of agrarian land use to climate change are presented.
