Investigations to determine the usable groundwater supply in Lower Austria and its probable development until the year 2050
Abstract
The water supply of the state of Lower Austria is to be ensured in the long term. Although the available quantities for drinking water, industry and agriculture will undoubtedly be sufficient for the future, there are clear regional differences. An important objective of water management (and also of local policy), namely to use as much local resources as possible without the need for trans-regional transfers through water supply networks, can already be fulfilled in some regions (eg Weinviertel), in other regions (eg B. Waldviertel), it can be expected in the future that demand will no longer be covered economically locally. The indication of the usable groundwater supply thus requires in the first step the estimation of the groundwater recharge, and in the second step the assumption of a share of it, the removal of which does not impair the ecological functioning of the waters. In a third step, it must be clarified whether and where exactly this available quantity can be taken from a technical and economic point of view, thus becoming economically viable groundwater supply. The group Water in the office of the NÖLR sees in the studies available so far no sufficiently reliable basis for a forward-looking planning of the water supply until the year 2050 more. The planned study therefore pursues the goal of determining the future use of groundwater by means of a hydrological model in which, in particular, changes due to climate change can be mapped. In addition, it can also be used to make statements about the seasonality of the groundwater characteristics. The subject of the project is therefore water balance simulation with the hydrological model (COSERO), with the objectives: - Analysis of seasonal groundwater recharge, groundwater storage characteristics and baseline runoff - Analysis of the spatio-temporal trends of groundwater recharge - Quantitative analysis of the development of groundwater recharge by 2050
