Social vulnerability and adaptive capacity to risks from the impacts of future heat waves and air pollution (Future Capacity)
Abstract
The research project Future_Capacity addresses the pressures of heat stress and air pollution for individuals and communities in Austria. It is motivated by the desire to advance our understanding of emerging climate risks and pressures towards (i) households and (ii) communities under different socio-environmental conditions. Future_Capacity proposes three main clusters of analysis for studying the dynamics that characterise the use of climate risk management in Austria. These dynamics involve: a) governance aspects, encompassing future adaptation planning constellations that guide climate risk management and decision-making, b) social aspects that determine the social vulnerability and individual capacity to deal with heat stress and air pollution, and c) climate modelling aspects that consider the future changes in heat and surface ozone burdens for health impacts on communities. Future_Capacity is designed with a multidisciplinary perspective using a broad methodological repertoire, integrating quantitative and qualitative natural and social science research methods.
