The gastrointestinal microbiota of humans and animals is a complex ecosystem that is inhabited by hundreds of different bacterial species. Because of its major impact on health and well-being the characterization and understanding of the intestinal microbiota is of great importance. The current development of new molecular techniques for the investigation of the complex communities allows the monitoring of the intestinal microbiota during feeding trials. In this work samples from feces and from the intestinal tract (after slaughtering) of pigs were analyzed. The microbiota samples from 76 pigs of four different feeding treatments were examined by using Denaturing-Gradient-Gel-Electrophoresis (DGGE), cloning and sequencing. The results display differences and changes in the intestinal microbiota during the feeding trials. Also a significant heterogeneity and therefore major individuality in the microbiota of pig of the same feeding group could be detected.
