Phenotyping of genetic variants of milk proteins in rare dairy cattle breeds in Austria.
Abstract
The objective of the present study is to analyze the distribution of milk protein phenotypes in rare dairy cattle breeds in Austria (Original Brown cattle, Tyrolean Grey, Tuxer cattle, Yellow cattle, Murbodner, Jersey and Holstein Friesian) and to calculate the current allele frequencies of alpha-, beta and kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin. Isoelectric focusing with carrier ampholytes will be used as a screening procedure for genotyping. As some genetic variants of beta-lactoglobulin and kappa-casein cannot be detected by this technique, isoelectric focusing with immobilized pH gradients will be established to identify these variants.
