Squares and parks in Bregenz Urban squares and parks developed in different ages and with diverse intentions. The planning and redesigning of these places were relevantly influenced by the different guiding principles and values of particular times. Today, often these squares and parks are open to the public and its function is to provide public spaces for the inhabitants. The theories of landscape and public planning emphasize the suitability for daily use. This master thesis analyses four chosen squares and parks in Bregenz and examines their suitability for daily use. Furthermore it looks for the guiding principles and values which had an effect on their history of development. I also investigate current discussions on public space and try to find out, what kind of values give directions to these debates. I have chosen an experiencebased approach for this master thesis. It includes a detailed record of structural and spatial tracks and investigations, and submits analyses and interpretations in regard to guiding principles and values. The finding of the thesis is an evaluation of today’s quality of these public spaces and it’s suitability of daily use for the inhabitants in Bregenz. Additionally it shows the guiding principles and values, which have led to the present appearance of these public spaces. I complete my thesis with planning suggestions for the four squares and parks I have been working on. Keywords: urban squares and parks, guiding principles, values, landscape planning, open space planning, redesigning, suitability for daily use
