Abstract
Die biotechnologische Produktion nativer und maßgeschneiderter rekombinanter Proteine ist ein komplexer Prozess. Er erfordert ein inter- und multidisziplinäres Ausbildungsprogramm, das neben biochemischen und zellbiologischen Grundlagen die Kenntnis von prokaryotischen und eukaryotischen Zellfabriken, von Bioinformatik und molekularer Modellierung sowie industrieller Umsetzung vermittelt. Das neue Doktoratskolleg BioToP (Biomolecular Technology of Proteins) integriert gezielt Grundlagenforschung und angewandte Forschung auf dem Gebiet moderner Proteinwissenschaften und Proteinproduktion für therapeutische, diagnostische und industrielle Anwendungen (vom Gen zum Produkt). Es bietet eine umfassende und topaktuelle forschungsgeleitete Ausbildung in den Fachgebieten (i) Struktur-Funktionsanalyse und Design von Proteinen, (ii) Synthese, Targeting und posttranslationale Modifikationen von Proteinen, (iii) Expressionssysteme und Zellfabriken, sowie (iv) Bioinformatik, Molekulare Modellierung und Downstream-processing.

BioToP wird für hoch qualifizierte weibliche und männliche Hochschulabsolventen aus aller Welt attraktiv sein. Die Studierenden werden die Möglichkeit haben, in einer von 14 Forschungsgruppen mit exzellenter wissenschaftlicher Kompetenz - belegt durch mehr als 420 SCI Publikationen im Zeitraum 2004 bis 2009 - zu arbeiten. Zusätzlich werden die Studierenden von bestehenden nationalen und europäischen Forschungsnetzwerken und industriellen Kompetenzzentren wie dem Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology und drei Christian Doppler Labors profitieren. Das internationale Doktoratsprogramm bietet eine exzellente, kreative und stimulierende Umgebung für Forschung und Ausbildung und wird die AbsolventInnen auf eine erfolgreiche Karriere in Grundlagenforschung und/oder angewandter Forschung vorbereiten.

BioToP ist ein gemeinsamer Antrag der BOKU-Departments für Angewandte Genetik und Zellbiologie, Biotechnologie, Chemie, Lebensmittelwissenschaften und –technologie, Materialwissenschaften und Prozesstechnik sowie Nanobiotechnologie, die gemeinsam das VIBT (Vienna Institute of BioTechnology) bilden. Aufgrund seines einzigartigen Forschungsclusters am Schnittpunkt von Grundlagenforschung und angewandter Forschung, der exzellenten Infrastruktur und der nötigen kritischen Masse an ForscherInnen bietet das VIBT den idealen Rahmen für eine stimulierende inter- und multidisziplinäre Ausbildung.
